    The G-50's Ninth Annual Meeting is held. Featured commentators include Otto Reich, Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Enrique Garcia, President and CEO of the Andean Development Corporation, James Woolsey, former head of the Central Intelligence Agency, Jules Kroll, of the security firm, Kroll Inc. and Jorge Quiroga Ramírez, former President of Bolivia.
    Argentina abandons the peso's 10-year-old link with the dollar in January, a move that is followed by currency depreciation and inflation, as well as rising poverty and continued social unrest.
    After more than 3 years of talks, Colombian President Andres Pastrana suspends the peace process with the FARC in February and orders the military and police forces to retake the former safe haven which the government had granted.
    Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, briefly ousted from power in mid-April, recovers the presidency after less than 48 hours.
    In May, Alvaro Uribe wins the election in Colombia with 53 percent of the vote, marking the first time in the country's history that a run-off was not needed.
    Brazil wins its fifth World Cup Soccer Championship in June, making it the country with the most championship titles.
    In September, the IMF approves a $30.4 billion loan to Brazil, its largest ever.

    Luis Inacio Lula da Silva of the left-wing Worker's Party wins Brazil's presidential election in October, after his fourth campaign for the office.
    Brazil and the United States assume their roles as co-chairs of the FTAA talks in November.

    Under the auspices of the Organization of American States, facilitators named by Belize and Guatemala submit their recommendations for a solution to the long-running territorial dispute between the two countries.
