Following the tragic attacks of September 11, 2001, the G-50 cancels its Eighth Annual Meeting, scheduled to begin on September 12. Many members are stranded in route to Washington.

In January, El Salvador approves the "Monetary Integration" law, which makes the U.S. dollar legal tender alongside the colón. Dollars gradually replace colóns, which are no longer printed and in practice the economy becomes dollarized.
