    The Seventh Annual Meeting of the G-50 focuses on how the Internet is impacting and transforming companies and society in Latin America and worldwide. Featured commentators include Alexander (Sandy) Pentland, Academic Head of MIT Media Labs and Wenceslao Casares, CEO and Co-founder of Patagon.com. The Youth Orchestra of the Americas is introduced during the annual meeting, with a masterclass by Benjamin Zander, Conductor of the Boston Philharmonic.
    Ricardo Lagos Escobar, the first socialist president to lead Chile since the 1973 coup which ousted President Salvador Allende, wins the presidency in January.
    Nicaragua and Costa Rica resolve a territorial dispute concerning navigation rights along the San Juan River in May.
    Elian González returns to Cuba in June after the United States' Supreme Court turns down a last minute appeal to keep the boy in the U.S., ending one of the most famous international custody battles on record.

    Opposition candidate Vicente Fox (Partido Acción Nacional - PAN) is elected on July 2 as president of Mexico, ending seventy-one consecutive years in power by the  Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI).
    Presidential Candidate George W. Bush delivers his "Century of the Americas" speech in August, promising to make Latin America a focal point of his presidency.
    Ecuador announces in September that it will replace its national currency with the U.S. dollar.
    In October, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries succeeds in shoring up oil prices by linking production cuts to a US$22-$28-a-barrel price band.
    A corruption scandal involving security chief Vladimiro Montesinos breaks just after Alberto Fujimori takes office for a constitutionally questionable third term. Fujimori flees Peru in November and resigns the presidency via fax from Japan.
