    The G-50 holds its Fifth Annual Meeting.  Featured commentators include chief scientist of Sun Microsystems John Gage and New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, among others.
    The G-50 travels to Coral Gables, Florida for a three-day meeting on Family Enterprises in the 21st Century. General sessions are led by renowned expert Ivan Lansberg.
    Andres Pastrana narrowly defeats Horacio Serpa Uribe and becomes president of Colombia in June.
    Fernando Henrique Cardoso is re-elected to a second term in October as president of Brazil, winning an absolute majority in the first round.
    Hurricane Mitch, the fourth strongest Atlantic hurricane on record, creates a human and economic catastrophe in Central America in October. Blamed for more than ten thousand deaths, Mitch also causes more than $9 mil millones in damages.
    Former Chilean military dictator General Augusto Pinochet is arrested in London in October and accused of human rights violations.
    In an effort to prevent the collapse of Brazil's economy - weakened by the impact of the Asian and Russian financial crises - an IMF-backed $41.5 billion dollar emergency adjustment package is arranged in November.
    Puerto Rican voters participate in a non-binding plebiscite in December to try and decide on the political status and future of the island, with 50.3 percent voting to maintain the status quo.
    The Asian financial crisis hits Latin America and ECLAC cites 1998 as one of the most problematic years on record.
