The Fourth Annual Meeting of the G-50 includes discussions with Mexico's Jorge Castañeda, best-selling author Francis Fukuyama, Dean of the Yale School of Management, Jeffrey Garten, Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Lawrence Summers, and Brookings Institute President Michael Armacost.

The G-50 travels to Havana, Cuba, meeting with various government officials including Fidel Castro, to discuss the economic, political and religious situation in the country.

The first transfer of power in recent Nicaraguan history from one democratically elected president to another takes place in January when Violeta Chammorro transfers the presidency to Arnoldo Alemán.

Peruvian army commandos storm the Japanese Ambassador's residence in April to free the 72 remaining hostages who were being held by members of the Tupac Amaru revolutionary movement. All 14 of the hostage takers and one hostage die during the rescue.
